An illustrated interaction
with Azhar Tyabji, author of
"BHUJ: Art, Architecture, History"
at Binny Room, Taj Connemara.
Photos
Azhar Tyabji studied art history,
history and community planning at university. He has since worked with
organisations in India, Morocco and the United States on heritage conservation
and urban development projects, most recently with the Environmental Planning
Collaborative in Ahmedabad. He is currently on a heritage conservation
project with the interdisciplinary conservation organisation, DRONAH, for
the Government of Rajasthan.
The book, "BHUJ: Art, Architecture
History" celebrates collaboration and demonstrates how ethnography and
advocacy planning can be intertwined to engage people in the making and
unmaking of a place says Rahul Mehrotra. Illustrated with pictures and
stories obtained from residents, museums and local organisations in Bhuj,
the book combines ethnography, a comment on the relationship between craft
and city-building and a thought-provoking critique of present day development
trends. Rare 19th- and 20th-century photographs complement the book's narrative,
which describes the fascinating economic role that the arts have played
in city building and the prospects ahead to marshal them as instruments
of future development.
Azhar Tyabji will interact with members
of heritage clubs in schools and colleges on 28th and 29th June.
