British Council and Prakriti Foundation presented Susheela Raman in concert in Chennai

Susheela Raman performed live in Chennai for the very first time and presented the magical rhythms of Asian, European and African music.

The Band: London-born tabla player Aref Durvesh, Cameroonian bassist Hilaire Penda, percussionist Djanuno Dabo from Guineau Bissau and London-based Sam Mills on guitar.

Susheela Raman was born in London in 1973 to South Indian parents and later moved to Australia. She grew up singing South Indian classical music and began giving rectials at an early age. She branched out into more Blues-based music, which demanded quite different voice techniques. In 1995, Susheela leant Hindustani music from Shruti Sadolikar, one of the greatest living Hindustani vocalists.

She returned to England in 1997 and started to work with Sam Mills who had made a record called Real Sugar with a Bengali singer Paban Das Baul. Her album Salt Rain was nominated for the Mercury Prize 2001. Susheela won the Best Newcomer Award in the BBC World Music Awards 2002.
