Showcasing
Andal
A two day session celebrating
the mystic vaishnavite saint poetess, Andaln was organised by Prakiriti
Foundation on 8 and 9 December in Chennai. The presentation titled 'Andal
Today - New Perspectives' was held at Sundara Mahal, a 100 year old bungalow
now restored, off Gopalapuram in Chennai.
Three
rooms on the first floor of this bungalow were used for displaying various
exhibits on Andal and for the paper presentations and performances.
As the guests entered, they were
first treated to a darshan of the 'Kovil Alwar' (altar) and the prasadam
(holy water) was given by a priest.
This hall also had Thanjavur paintings
of the saint poetess and 100 year-old pooja articles displayed by art-collectors
Lily Vijayaraghavan and Shata Guhan. These included bronzes of Tulasimadam,
kumkum box, Chatari, mirror, ornaments, hairpins and combs relating to
Andal.
Beautiful flower garlands specially
made in the 'Andal style' were hung around the halls. S. Suresh, K.S. Rangarajan
and S. Chandru all graland makers from Srirangam were invited to make these
garlands. 'Kilis' (parrots) made out of oliander leaves in the 'Srivilliputhur
style' and the 'Srirangam style' were also on display.
Framed photographs of the Srivilliputhur
temple, taken by Satyajit Dhananjayan were displayed in the hall where
the seminar was held.
Morning sessions on December 8 included
Tiruppavai recitation by Padma Narayanan and group followed by paper presentations
on the saint poetess by various scholars.
Arayar
Sevai by a priest from the Andal temple of Srivilliputhur was held at Nithyakalyanaswami
Perumal temple at Tiruvidendai off Chennai.
